The installation of an intercom system, enabling direct communication from classrooms to the sheriff’s office, should be complete by the beginning of the Fall 2008 semester. Nextel has created a one-of-a-kind prototype call box that teachers and students alike can use to directly speak to the sheriff in the case of an emergency.

Where you are in the money scheme
In what has been declared a time of fiscal emergency, the California Community Colleges System (CCC) and K-12 stand to suffer a forecasted $4.4 billion budget cut, according to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s proposed 2008-09 budget. Schwarzenegger proposed a $40 million cut to the CCC for the remainder of this fiscal year; with the new fiscal year starting July 1, another $480 million is forecasted to be cut.
New smoking policy might rock our socks
Many smokers are brooding about the new smoking regulations being put into effect this semester. Some non-smokers are complaining that the lack of sternness exercised by the new regulation makes it no more than an elaborate “please.” Look at the bright side of it all, though; now, everyone knows where it’s alright to smoke and where it may bother someone.
Learning online, ‘Moodle’ style
At its Dec. 4 meeting, the Pierce College Academic Senate discussed a new program for faculty called Moodle that will help create an easy and effective online learning system for students. Moodle only became possible due to Title III, a U.S. Department of Education grant in the amount of $370,000 per year for five years that was awarded to Pierce in 2002.
Poor planning leads to low homecoming attendance
Without a king or queen, or much involvement from the clubs for a unique new arrangement the Associated Students’ Organization (ASO) planned for Saturday’s homecoming, few in attendance realized that the game was Pierce College’s official homecoming game. Cheerleading coach Jenny Johnson organized the 2004 and 2005 homecomings, and had planned on continuing the traditional event, complete with king and queen this year.
Latino club renamed, shifts focus to faith
Latinos with a Purpose, an Associated Students Organization club at Pierce College, recently changed its name to Refuge. With a mission statement, “to promote our Latino culture and share our Christian faith,” they have decided to rename themselves to include everyone at Pierce.
ASO re-establishes student court
Starting this semester, the Associate Student’s Organization (ASO) will be re-establishing its judicial branch, the student court. The student court has not been in session for more than 4 years. “The court would be there to decide how to moderate student issues and grievances,” said ASO president Abraham White.
Lower fees with winter session
With approximately nine weeks remaining in the current semester, students can begin planning for the five-week winter intersession that will begin on Jan. 2, 2007 to Feb. 3, 2007 at Pierce College. The schedule of classes will be available to students Nov.
