The U.S. Senate is scheduled to vote this week on a new G.I. Bill designed to further educational benefits for post-9/11 veterans. S.22, also called the “Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act,” would provide 36 months of benefits up to the cost of the most expensive in-state public school, as well as money for books and housing costs to those returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, according to a news release by Sen.

Six DJs, one house, all party
Building a bridge between electro and indie, club “Dance” joins several different music scenes for an electrifying Tuesday-night mixture. Located at the Arena Café on Santa Monica Boulevard, this club caters to the 18 and older crowd, complete with two stories of dance floor, a full bar and an outdoor smoking patio.

May 8 – 4:20 p.m. A suspect broke into a vehicle and took an electronic Casio keyboard, valued at $800. May 12 – 3 p.m. A car was vandalized in Lot 4. 6:30 p.m. 14 laptops were taken from Room 3310 in the Fine Arts Building. Each laptop is valued at $2,500.
Bookstore makes video to promote Buyback
The traditional Book Buyback will occur May 22 to June 3, a month after the untraditional YouTube and MySpace release of the “Books and Beyond” music video produced by the Pierce College Bookstore. The rap song was written and performed by Pierce student Cardel Jackson, who goes by the stage name of J Stylez 285.
Financial promises
The funding provided to California Community Colleges has rarely been the amount promised, but Assembly Bill 2277, introduced by Assemblyman Mike Eng, hopes to lay the groundwork that will prevent future shortfalls. This bill has been put on the state’s “suspense file,” but will be reconsidered this month, according to the Community College League of California.
New CCC chancellor chosen
Jack Scott, former Pasadena City College president, was named chancellor of the California Community Colleges Thursday. Scott will replace Diane Woodruff Jan. 1, when his term as state senator ends. Woodruff has been interim chancellor since July 2007. Scott will take over the 109-campus CCC in a critical time of the state budget crisis.
Special honor for student at President’s Honor event
Pierce College student Trish Loughnane, who made it on the All-California Academic Team of Phi Theta Kappa, an international honors society for two-year colleges, was recognized for her achievements. Graduating in June, Loughnane has maintained a 3.5 GPA during her five years at Pierce and is leaving with an A.
Transferring: It’s not that easy
Buried in the general catalog lies the Pierce College mission statement, which contains a promise to dedicate all resources to ensure students achieve their educational, career and personal goals. Among those is the desire to transfer from Pierce to a four-year university, preferably in two years.
