Six Pierce College students will feature their artwork in “Sub Urban Myth.” The exhibit’s opening reception takes place this Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Canoga Park Youth Arts Center. Artwork will range from oil on canvas, oil on wood, paper on canvas and pencil on wood.

The exhibit will feature all new works from artists Rachel Heller, Greg Thirolway, Diego Gutierrez, Eva Montealegre, Lynda Esh and Sara E. Wedman. The municipal art gallery has invited the students into their gallery to show their work to the community.

“I’m really impressed with the work the students have put in thus far,” said art professor Constance Kocs, who helped facilitate the event.

Stuart Vaughan, a Youth Arts Center employee said, “It’s great for students to exhibit their artwork to the community.” He added, “Part of our mission is to create partnerships. It’s great that Pierce is getting involved.” He also said there definitely be more student run galleries in the future.

“They are going to build their portfolio, not just with pretty pictures, but with intent,” said Kocs.

She said they are showing dedication and this would be a great experience. The work is outside class activities and assignments, according to Kocs.

Eva Montealegre, a fine art major who’s artwork will be shown this weekend said, “I consider it a great honor…it means a lot to me because so much of my technical knowledge as an artist was acquired at Pierce.”

She also said, “I hope it will be successful so other artists can experience the group effort and professional approach that Constance is instilling in us.”

“As a result, [students] are going to walk away with a very extraordinary experience [they] wouldn’t usually get as a community college student,” said Kocs.

The art gallery is open to the public and free, it runs until June 8.
