Brahma Drive construction to begin tomorrow

Construction to straighten Brahma Drive is set to begin tomorrow, Pierce College President Robert Garber announced at the Academic Senate meeting on May 14.

The construction will start by the Freudian Sip. The project will straighten out the road and remove the stop sign.

The reason for the construction is because there are plans to build a new Student Service Center and the stop sign must be removed to make room for the building.

Another purpose of the project is to repair the road and give it a new surface.

“Our goal is for this project to be completed by the start of the fall semester,” said Garber.

The project will have an impact on the number of lanes that are available on Brahma Drive.

“There will be times were the lanes are restricted to one way, but for the most part both lanes should be open,” said Garber.

The teachers will keep parking in the same place as usual. The small lot on the hill will be made available for additional teacher’s parking.

“People will be notified by bulletins, e-mails and information will be put on the Pierce Web site regarding any changes,” said Garber.

Pierce administrators will meet every Wednesday with the construction management to discuss the project and how it is progressing.

“The end result will be more space for students parking,” said Garber.

This project is part of the huge renovation of the Pierce campus, which is projected to last about a year.

Other projects are currently in progress, like the tearing down of the bungalows to build a science building.

Some projects that are set to begin soon are the rebuilding of El Rancho Drive, which is located off De Soto Avenue and the building of a large storm drain that connects to the Los Angeles River.

The storm drain will expand the central air conditioning. It also will have an effect on the roads during the construction.

“If possible, we will try to get them to do it on the weekends,” said Garber.

These projects have been in planning for several years and are set to get done as quickly as possible.

“It all ties together like one big jigsaw puzzle,” said Garber. “The end result will be a nicer Pierce campus.”

Renovations on Brahma Drive will straighten the road and eliminate the stop. ()
