As a new semester begins at Pierce College, returning students may find themselves staring into the fresh faces of the newest additions to the Pierce faculty. Professor Cari Meyer is one of the most recent members to join the chemistry department at Pierce.

Computer science department gives professor an ‘add slip’
Noted for his commitment to helping his students not only learn, but also enjoy the learning experience, David Schamus is one of many professors joining Pierce College’s full-time staff this fall. For more than 25 years, Schamus, 52, has found joy in helping students learn.
Botanical Garden comes into full bloom
It was a day of enthusiasm and celebration on Friday, as nearly 130 students, faculty and district officials were treated to exotic Australian entrees and beverages while they witnessed the grand opening of the S. Mark Taper Foundation Botanical Garden. Described as “absolutely beautiful” by Nancy Pearlman, member of the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) board of trustees, the botanical garden on campus is now approximately two acres and includes 170 new plant species native to Australia, three mission-style shade structures, several new benches and a new dry creek bed.
Enrollment reaches a 25-year high
As Pierce College celebrates sixty years of academic excellence, enrollment is rising rapidly – there are currently 20,049 students enrolled for the fall 2007 semester. That’s a 7.4 percent increase when compared to enrollment numbers from fall 2006. Enrollment of international students has also increased steadily during the last few semesters.
Brahmas struggle to win
The Pierce College football team couldn’t have started the 2007 season in a better scenario. On Saturday Sept. 8th, they won their second consecutive game of the season, 16-14, against the Golden West Rustlers. It was the home opening game of the season, and after last week’s win against the East L.
New Learning Center Teacher
Steve Musha New Learning Center Teacher-Curt Riesberg 2-2-2-2 Curt Riesberg, 45, is the new English Specialist at the Pierce College Learning Center where he has been working full-time since last spring. As an English Specialist at The Learning Center, Riesberg teaches reading and writing classes, as well as working with The Learning Center tutors.
Soccer ties to long time rivals
The Pierce College women’s soccer team, now 3-1-2 (wins-losses-draws), ended their second home game drawing 2-2 against rival Moorpark College Women’s soccer team Tuesday. Both teams started the match physically. The unexpected occurred when Megan Moreno, Moorpark’s team captain, sustained an ankle compound fracture during a tackle in the first half, leaving the team to continue without her.
New ASO president is a stranger ‘no Moss’
Tessa Moss isn’t the typical 22-year-old college student. Driving down Victory Boulevard in her primer-colored 1989 Chevrolet Camaro, Moss isn’t listening to the latest Timberlake and Timbaland remix. In fact, she doesn’t even have a car stereo. Just the occasional whisper of air in her ear accompanies the Kansas native to where she feels ever-so-lucky to be going – Lot 7 of Pierce College.
