Hillel says Shalom

Hillel, the club for Jewish students, has open arms to anyone who wants to join in their year around events.

Hillel had a kick-off free “Kosher BBQ Thursday,” with tropical drinks and a “rockin’ hula contest.”

Andrew Schwartz, part of the Jewish Campus Services Corps Fellow, said he is looking forward to additonal students joining the club this semester.

“We have about fifty to seventy members officially in the club,” he said.

Working with Schwartz are two other staff members: Ben Goldberg, club president, and Pierce Jewish peer intern, and Nomi Gordon, the executive director.

Schwartz and Goldberg said that they look forward to working with the Christian Club for events in the future.

“I feel that it is very important to be tolerant in today’s society,” said Goldberg.

He also stated that the club feels comfortable on campus and the students are “opened minded, which is great.”

Hillel has been open to members and the community alike for 30 years.

Both Jewish and non-Jewish students are welcome to participate in any events that take place on the Pierce campus or California State University, Northridge campus.

“We would love to see anyone interested in being Jewish come around,” said Goldberg. Periodically, there are services for religious events, like Yom Kippur, which take place on the CSUN campus.

Hillel plans to host festive Sukkot celebrations on Oct. 2. It is an event in which temporary structures are made to house guests, to eat under and sometimes in which to sleep.

Pierce has many clubs on campus and Goldberg stated, “Being in a club gives you a chance to meet new people and have fun.”

Later in the semester, Hillel plans to organize a free winter trip to Israel for ten days for students ages 18 to 26.

President Goldberg can be contacted for more information on the trip and the application process.
