It was supposed to be an easy win for Pierce College football, but they lost to West Los Angeles College 31-25 on Saturday.

The Brahmas traveled to face the winless Oilers, who had lost their first five games, including a 49-point blowout lost at College of the Canyons on Sept. 29.

“I thought we had every right to be over confident,” said Assistant head coach Damien Porter. “It may have been the worst team we played all season.”

With the loss, Pierce’s record stands at 3 wins and 3 losses and will travel to Glendora to face Citrus College on Oct. 20, which has a record of 4-2.

“The kids feel bad about it, the coaches feel bad about it,” said head coach Efrain Martinez.

Tough to get over it but the only way to get over it, is to beat Citrus.”

Although Pierce had a 25-13 lead at one point of the game, it didn’t seem to go their way.

The Brahmas quarterbacks were guilty of six interceptions, while running back Edward Gomez and wide receiver Theo Alexander both had one fumble each.

“Turn the ball over that many times and you’ll lose,” said Porter. “We didn’t execute the whole game.”

We still had a chance to win game.”

Martinez said, “Hopefully, the team will wake up. We’re not good enough to have one or two players to play well.

We need to have 33 players to play well.”

Our best players have to step up and become leaders. We can only show them how.”

Both coaches are still hopeful about their players.

“That game meant to teach us a lesson,” Porter said.

We do need adversity. A leader will emerge. Somebody or some bodies will step up and become a leader.”

Martinez said, “We are so young, that we play up to everyone. If we play a good team, we play close. If we play a bad team, we play close.”

We don’t have that fire. That desire. Hopefully we will have it by the end of the season. Hopefully.”
