Pop music is never going to go away. The music that simple hooks and easy to sing along lyrics lingers in our favorite television shows, throughout the malls, and even in the Freudian Sip on campus. It is everywhere. Just because it is everywhere, that does not mean that this type of music that everyone is favoring. So what is the quality of pop music today? Artists today, seem to babbling on about nonsense in their work. Getting in the car going home, to school, or to work and flipping on the radio is a constant headache. There is nothing more annoying than to turn on the radio and hear the same song on more than one station at the same time. It seems that pop music has worsened over the years and it’s getting harder to escape. In a friend’s car, she blares 102.7 KIIS-FM. In the same hour, two different songs by the same artist were played. So what if 50 Cent is popular and his songs are recognizable? Something just is not there- substance. The average person probably cannot obtain that amount that he glorifies throughout his song, “I Get Money.” What about Britney Spears and “Gimme More?” After listening to the song, there still is no clear meaning of what she exactly wants. Meaning is all lost in these songs that are continuously coming out. Almost every genre of music has gone pop. R&B, one of the most beautiful genres of music has undergone the pop frenzy. Country music had taken the leap as well. Popular music is in demand. Audiences want more and the artists are there to pump it out. There is a lot more popular radio and television music stations playing this type of music more than ever because of its massive outlet– the listeners. With pop celebrities promoting albums and tons of other products, it is very hard to hide from pop bubbly, catchy and repetitive sounds. What is the solution to avoiding pop music in its entirety? There aren’t many, but “pop” in a favorite CD, channel surf every few minutes or let it play and tune it out. If that is not the remedy, there is also the idea of learning and listening to different types of music. There is plenty to choose from, soft rock, jazz, and gospel. Pop isn’t going anywhere any time soon but there is always room for another genre of music.
