A legacy of excellence

Winning a championship is no cakewalk; now, the Pierce College women’s soccer team has done it three times in a row.

This year the team has been consistently impressive.

A 2-0 win against Bakersfield College this month resulted in them winning its third consecutive Southern Division Western State Conference championship.

There were only two disappointments this season:

A 3-0 loss to Cuyamaca College in their first game of the season and a 2-1 loss to Cypress College in the postseason.

Finishing the season with just two losses is no easy feat, yet this team has done that. Games against rival teams are never simple, but Pierce overcame the best that challenged them, sometimes winning by large margins.

The Brahmas ended their season with a formidable record of 17 wins, two losses and five draws.

What makes it even more amazing is that this year’s team has more freshmen than sophomores.

Starting from the ground up in 2001, head coach Adolfo Perez has built this team year after year.

Despite an influx of freshmen joining the team and sophomores moving on, Perez has created a winning formula here at Pierce.

Assistant coaches Tony Ortega, Victor Lopez and April Cline played important roles in molding the players as well.

At the end of the 2006 season, it was questionable just how the team would perform with the departure of all-time leading goal scorer Elia Petrosian and several veterans.

That question was answered this season with players such as midfielder Amanda Bernal, defender Allison Fass and goalkeeper Natasha Jackson, just to name a few, proving the skeptics wrong.

Since they have come onto the scene, the Pierce College women’s soccer team has become a gem of Pierce athletics. Congratulations and good luck next season!
