A soldier of one… no more

Imagine reliving the worst moments of your life almost every night.

Dreams so vivid and so real that you can’t tell the difference between them and reality.

They are the kind of dreams that try to smother the fire in your soul a little more, every time you have them.

Welcome to my world.

I am a veteran who served our country for four years and I am very proud of this.

When the events of Sept. 11, 2001 occurred, I was in my first year of service, and I was thrown into war.

I won’t go into details, because it would take to long, and I’m saving it for the shrink, but I can tell you that it wasn’t fun.

Every day has become a battle for me.

Waking up, getting to school, taking care of my house, life, friends and family.

That short time in my life has affected me more than I thought.

It seems that in today’s society if you are a man, veteran or solider, we aren’t supposed to talk about our feelings.

I know there are a lot of other people out there who are dealing with the same feelings as mine, but, sometimes, just sharing what happened to me with others, helps heal the wounds.

It’s hard for people who weren’t there to hear what happened to us overseas, but it’s an issue we all need to deal with.

When you meet someone who has served our country, look them in the eye and ask him or her if they are ok.

Don’t try to skim over the fact that war isn’t just over territories and oil; real people and their loved ones are involved.

Not just the soldiers and veterans in America, but all over the world.

I know what I’m asking is tough to do, but it might help more than you think.

After all, we are still humans too.
