Cartoon countdown

Most college students are sleeping on a Saturday morning at 8 a.m.

In fact, anyone over the age of 18 that doesn’t have to work on the weekend should be sleeping; however, if I have no place to be on Saturday , I like to kick off the day with Kids WB.

No, you didn’t just misread that sentence. I am a 22 year-old man who enjoys watching Saturday morning cartoons with a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch.

If you are done laughing at the image in your head, I’ll explain why.

I am a firm believer that cartoons are a legitimate form of meditation. In meditation, one is to erase all thoughts of the outside world.

You are to focus on the simplicity of “being.”

As a child, when watching Saturday morning cartoons, I achieved this meditative state.

The first day of the weekend began with me forgetting all about the outside world.

There was only me, Batman and the weekly bad guy. No time to think about homework when Batman was tackling his latest moral dilemma.

What about mowing the lawn?

No, it wasn’t important when the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were fighting the evil Shredder.

I was in a different world.

Every Saturday I took a two-hour time out to simply enjoy life.

Now if I can grab those two Saturday morning hours, I can achieve some semblance of peace.

Carrying a full academic load, working part-time, writing for this newspaper and trying to please my girlfriend (yes, she knows about the cartoons) leaves almost no room to simply “be.”

Currently, I am still trying to determine how to balance my life.

I do know that these cartoons provide a short respite from my hectic schedule.

Therefore, join me.

Wake up early one Saturday morning, grab a bowl of cereal, sit down with Batman and simply “be.”
