Summer performance ‘Carousel’ set to have largest cast
A large cast of Pierce College students will be performing Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel” this summer in the Performance Arts building. The Pierce College Theatre department is currently having auditions for this musical; singers, dancers and actors are encouraged to go to the Theatre Department to sign up.
‘Professor of the Year’ honored at AS meeting
Dr. Isidore “Izzy” Goodman, head of the chemistry department at Pierce College, was named Professor of the Year at the Academic Senate meeting on April 30. The honor was awarded to Goodman by the Professional Growth and Development Committee headed by Kathy Oborn, political science and economics professor.
Overstepping the boundaries
Why are bad teachers allowed to continue teaching? Many Pierce College students report that professors tell their classes they cannot be fired no matter what they do. One professor regularly goes on angry tirades in class, belittling students, telling them to shut up and even going to far as to tell a student to kneel before him as an apology for speaking out of turn.
As cost of living increases, health fee stays the same
If there was to be a health fee increase, a male psychologist will be quickly added to the health center staff. As each new semester approaches students are forced to pay all those fees that come along with enrolling. There is the ASO fee, the parking permit, the student representation fee and the $11 health fee.
Analyzing teaching methods
The oversight and implementation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) is now in the hands of Professor Barbara Anderson, who was elected SLO coordinator during the May 14 Academic Senate meeting. SLOs are used to track and analyze predetermined criteria within a particular course, so that teachers can assess the students’ performance in various aspects of the course.
New campus center in the works
A blemish on the Promenade Mall now for well-nigh two years, the former bookstore is finally receiving some much-needed attention in the form of a $2,380,000 makeover. The renovations, scheduled for completion in December, will transform the abandoned bookstore into Pierce College’s new and more versatile Campus Center.
Updated security measures in the works
Plans to improve security and communication in emergency situations on campus were addressed at the Academic Senate meeting May 14 by Pierce College President Robert Garber. “One of the problems at Virginia Tech was that there was no communication telling people to stay in one place,” said Garber.
