Self-test assesses school’s ranking
Pierce College will run a self-assessment test to acquire knowledge of its current status among the nine colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District. The announcement for this new system of self-testing was announced March 21 at the Academic Senate meeting.
Reddock appointed LACCD trustee
The Los Angeles Community College District board of trustees has appointed attorney Angela J. Reddock, of Westchester, to fill the vacant trustee seat that has existed since the February resignation of President Michael Waxman. Reddock will complete Waxman’s four-year term, which ends June 30, 2009.
Search for fourth dean of academic affairs:
Applications are being accepted through April 27 at the human resources office at Pierce College to fill the position of a fourth dean of academic affairs. The salary for this position ranges from $94,560 to $132,714. This is also a position that affects the lives of more than 19,000 students who attend Pierce.

In the fast-paced world of the San Fernando Valley, it’s hard to picture a Pierce College student sans a car. Driving to school, work, social activities or the occasional shopping spree, a car is as much a necessity as a cell phone. Well, I’ve got a shocking confession to make: I don’t have a car.
The best of deceiving:
Hitting Pierce College theaters next week is the first-ever film festival, “Celebrating Diversity.” Headed by Sylvia Silva, compliance officer and chairwoman of the Diversity Committee, the film festival will take place from April 23 to 27 in various places on campus.
Winds leave campus in the dark
Due to 65 mph winds in the San Fernando Valley, a power outage affected most of the Pierce College campus along with parts of the Valley and Los Angeles Thursday at approximately 12:45 p.m. According to Dubinsky, manager of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, who did not give a first name, strong winds caused power lines to collapse as well as trees to topple over, knocking down power lines.
Library databases world at fingertips
Each year, $30,000 is spent on 29 databases available to students for free in the library and in their homes. Subscriptions for search databases allow students to view journals and full text articles from databases such as InfoTrac, LexisNexis academic, Newsbank and Business Source Premier, the world’s largest full text business database.
“F” for e-mail failure
The beginning of the semester is a critical time for students to enroll in classes and get off to a good start for the rest of the year. In this day and age, technology has taken over and the “best” way to reach anyone is through e-mail. During the end of first week and beginning of the second week on the Pierce campus, it was not.
