Campus Wi-Fi in the works

Wireless Internet access is in the works for the Pierce College campus, but according to Information Technology Manager Mark Henderson, “we haven’t fleshed out all the particulars yet.”The hazy details include the cost of the project and the funding source, the timeframe in which it will be completed and the areas where Wi-Fi will be installed on campus. The timeframe for getting the project started and completed depends on budgetary restraints, according to Henderson.”This is something we’ve been trying to do for awhile,” he said. “This is something we should be doing with improving technology. There are a lot of infrastructure things that need to take place first, prior to jumping into that world.”Though campuswide Wi-Fi is an option, “hotspots” are being considered as an alternative.”The issue has been trying to determine and get everybody to agree on what the congregation spots are,” Henderson explained. “That’s a moving target.”Pacey Alejandro, 20, a business major, said that she would like to use her laptop in classrooms, but would use it for MySpace aside from her studies.Henderson said Wi-Fi service should be free, but that only students would be able to utilize it.”It depends on what business model we’re going to use, but it should be free service like it is at the Sip,” Henderson said. “You just have to have an SSID login. You have to be a student.”Henderson stressed that security was a major factor in the project.”Security is the big aspect,” he said. “We want to make sure we roll something out that protects our systems, as well as our students.”Wi-Fi was recently added near the Fine Arts Department as a test, making it the third area on campus that offers Wi-Fi aside from the Freudian Sip and the newly built Student Community Center.”We wanted to test in a smaller area…as far as our terrain, security and different things like that,” Henderson said. “This seemed to be our best spot to try it.”The routing equipment installed on the art hill was stolen not long after installation, a $160 loss that was quickly replaced, according to Henderson.Regarding the costs of the project,”It all depends on how we decide to roll this out,” Henderson said, referring to the indecision about who will have access to the Internet and whether it will be available campuswide, or only in hotspots. “Those different variables definitely dictate the cost.”A Technology Advisor Committee meeting will take place tomorrow, where details including timeframes and hotspots will be discussed, according to Henderson.Funding strategies for the project will also be discussed at the meeting, according to Kenneth Takeda, vice president of administrative services.”We recognize that this is a service that should be provided, and we’re working to try and make some provisions,” Henderson said of Wi-Fi expansion at Pierce. “It’s just kind of challenging right now, in light of cuts to the state budget. We’re trying to do the best we can with what we have as far as implementation goes.”
