The posters went up. The votes were put in.

And the final decision elected Christian Marfil-Amatulli as the new Associated Students Organization president for the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 academic semesters.

Marfil-Amatulli, 26, philosophy and political science major, has been attending Pierce College for three years.

He has been involved with ASO for the past year.

Marfil-Amatulli was a part of the automotive program for two years and participated in their vocational placement program, where he became a certified auto mechanic.

He worked as a fabrication technician for six years: first at 4 Wheel Parts in Van Nuys, and then at Pep Boys.

He stopped his employment with Pep Boys when he became a student worker for Dr. Donna-Mae Villanueva, dean of Academic Affairs.

“What got me motivated to get back on my academics was the automotive program,” Marfil-Amatulli said. “I wanted to achieve more.”

Marfil-Amatulli said he wants to help motivate the students to be more involved in what is happening on campus.

One goal that Marfil-Amatulli hopes to accomplish is to form a coalition between the ASO and the Pierce College Bookstore.

This is to promote open awareness about the rising prices of books and what needs to be done to keep prices from going higher with each passing semester.

“When teachers don’t turn in requisitions, book prices go up,” Marfil-Amatulli said. “Students don’t know that this price raise is happening, and some teachers may not be aware. If you’re aware, you’re educated, and if you’re educated, things get done.”

Marfil-Amatulli was also elected as At-Large-Senator for the Student Senate of California Community Colleges by the General Assembly of Associated Student Organizations, May 4, at the Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles.

In the SSCCC, student senators are sent to Sacramento to represent the Los Angeles Community College District.

These senators represent the voice of the students and propose resolutions on behalf of LACCD students. His term assigned is one year.

Marfil-Amatulli is a full-time student and hopes to transfer to University of California, Berkeley, UCLA or University of Pennsylvania after his tenure as ASO president.

Once he obtains his bachelor’s degrees in political science and philosophy, as well as a master’s degree in law, he wants to run for a political position – either state or federal.
