So it’s that time of the year when the weather starts to change, leaves fall, the jackets come out and tissues get used more than ever – flu season.

Anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting the flu can get vaccinated. However, many people do not even think about getting the shot.

What isn’t true is the flu shot will give you the flu. The injected flu virus is a killed virus, not a live strain like the smallpox vaccine, so you can’t receive the flu from the injected virus. Nonetheless, the type that is most commonly administered is the injection with the killed virus.

Though the vaccine is helpful, it is not a guarantee against the flu. Made from the last year’s bug, it covers the most common strains of flu in a given year and protects you against those. Yes, you may get a different strain of the flu than the ones covered in the vaccine, which is why some people say it doesn’t work.

I’ve gotten the flu in the past despite getting the flu shot. However, I still receive the flu shot each year and the medical community also mandates that all its employees receive the flu shot.

I recommend getting the flu shot. Costing only $12 at Pierce, the vaccination helps prevent spreading the flu to your children and other loved ones.

For me I think getting the shot is very important because not only does it prevent you from staying in bed for two weeks but it helps you stay healthy and helps you not catch any other type of viruses that come from having the flu.

Vaccination is definitely the way to go. Sick time is better used for mental-health days when you can go shopping, not for sitting home with the flu!
