Despite a strong early-game start for the Pierce football team last night at West Los Angeles College, their luck did not hold until the end and they ended up losing, 50-37.

Pierce quarterback Taylor Budd ran the game’s first touchdown in the beginning of the first quarter, scoring the extra point to bring the score to 7-0.

A few minutes later, West L.A. scored two consecutive touchdowns – one after an interception – setting Pierce behind, 13-7.

“West L.A. has a good key player,” said head coach Efrain Martinez. “We couldn’t stop him.”

The second quarter began positively when Budd made another touchdown, but Pierce gave up a touchdown and a field goal to West L.A. shortly afterward, further widening the score gap to 23-13.

Almost two minutes before the ending of the second quarter, Pierce wide-receiver Kenny Davis made a completion on a 20-yard pass, resulting in a touchdown. West L.A. broke through the Brahmas’ defense not long after, running up from the 50-yard line and making a touchdown that set the score at 30-19.

“They have a lot of speed on the field,” Budd commented about the opponent. In the third and fourth quarters, Pierce made three touchdowns run by Raukeen Foreman, running back; Taylor Budd, quarterback; and Dominick Baker, defensive back, but West L.A. also made two touchdowns, sealing their victory at 50-37.

“Pierce has a really good football team,” said Marguet Miller, West L.A. head coach. “For us, (the game was) a test. We knew it would be a tough game.”

The remarkable thing about this game is that Budd made three touchdowns.

“Very sweet,” Budd happily said, “but the team lost the game.”

“The good teams will win on the road if we had won today,” Martinez said. “I’d say we are good team. The fact (is that) we didn’t win on the road.”

The Pierce football team still has a lot of work to do because the players are still young and inconsistent, according to Martinez.

At 1-4 for the season and 1-1 in conference, the football team will go on to face Los Angeles Southwest College for a home game tomorrow at 7 p.m.

Pierce College corner-back Evan Jenkins fails to stop a West Los Angeles College offense in the second quarter of the game at West L.A. College last night. Pierce lost, 50-37, bringing their conference standing to 1-1 and season standing to 1-4. ()
