The Pierce College girl’s soccer team lost 2-1 to Bakersfield College last Friday. Now, to reclaim their title as Western State Conference champions, they must win each of their last two games.
Bakersfield player Jasmine Howard, #2, scored a goal in each half of the game in what her coach Scott Dameron called “one of the most intense games we’ve played in the season.”
Emily Martinez, #4, scored the only point for Pierce from a penalty kick in the middle of the second half.
Bakersfield lost the last time they played at Pierce, in what head coach Adolfo Perez called a “very brutal, very physical game,” which he also called Friday’s game.
“They are one of the biggest teams in the conference,” he said, but Pierce was able to win with a home field advantage and a score of 1-0. Even though Friday’s game was “hard fought,” said Perez, Pierce was not able to catch up to Howard.
Pierce and Bakersfield are now tied for the WSC championships. Both teams are set to play Glendale Community College and College of the Canyons to determine their final ranking in the WSC.
“There are still two games left, so plenty can happen,” said Dameron.
Pierce won the WSC last year and hopes to hold on to its rank as league champions.
