Open Mic Opinion

Adrian Kweli

If you probably think I attend the various open mic sessions for the free food, a glass of tap water, and maybe to make some new friends-who for once, ought to be girls-you are totally wrong. Well, kind of wrong.

I actually happen to be inspired by the raw, deep, and yet-to-be censored student poems that usually end up being the main themes of the sessions. It is really great the Pierce community was able to put forth an initiative where students can do “their own thing,” showcasing themselves through their own poetry, song and dance, or any other form of self-expression.

One of the best attitudes these sessions offer is that students don’t have to be perfect in whatever it is they are presenting, so there is no pressure of being booed off stage. This alone is a traumatizing experience second only to alien abduction. The events boost one’s confidence in public speaking and even in daily awkward moments. But since poems are the simplest to convey, I think I, too, will give it a shot.

Not only do we have time off class, work, or Facebook, but we have a chance to engage ourselves in creativity. It has been found that people who have an artistic side-or at least forge one-often show high trends of intellectual ability. This is the reason I believe we start playing with crayons at such a young age, and I still don’t understand why my accounting professor will not let me use them to answer the test scantrons.

Let us not forget one of the main reasons I think we should always attend these sessions. It is always fun to meet new people and make new friends. I figured this would be much easier and less stressful than making pen-pal friends who are all the way in Russia, who don’t speak a word of English.

The next open mic event will take place today at 1 p.m. in the Great Hall. Food that is usually free will cost only $1.

If it will be your first time attending, you do not have to worry about the emcee asking you to stand up and embarrassingly introduce yourself to the crowd, like they usually do in Sunday school.

Thank you, Associated Students Organization.
