Oscar nominees in makeup and hair offered tips of their trades and advice for wannabes at a symposium the day before the big event. At Samuel Goldwyn Theater, Feb. 23, the nominated films for makeup and hair were “La Vie En Rose,” “Norbit” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” (POTC3).

Jack Black and Mos Def join forces
“Be Kind Rewind” was an imaginative and hilarious depiction of what it is like to have an idea and just go for it. Jerry (Jack Black) and Mike (Mos Def) are two opposite people. Mike is a loyal clerk at a video store (no DVDs) called “Be Kind Rewind” and Jerry is the wacky friend who thinks the local power plant is melting his brain.
Reggie Smith Jr. new defensive coordinator
Reggie Smith Jr., son of former Major League Baseball player Reggie Smith, accepted a position as the new defensive coordinator for the Pierce College football team. He came to Pierce after coaching at Chaminade High School in West Hills for the past five years.
Reward when merited
Jim is a professional. He works hard everyday to do the best job he can on any given project and his customers have reaped the rewards of his natural talent and the pains he takes for his work. Bob works alongside Jim; he’s unmotivated, not particularly talented and puts in minimal effort.
Farm Market returning for the harvest
The Farm Market at Pierce College will be reopening April 1, providing fresh produce for Pierce and the local community every day. The Market, which has been closed since September, is stocked mostly with produce grown at Pierce; however, some items such as strawberries are imported from other local growers, according to Market manager Linda Carberry.
Suffering Secondhand
It is safe to assume that everyone reading this publication is well aware of the fact that cigarette smoke is harmful to an individual’s health. The number of public service announcements warning consumers of the fatality of smoking cigarettes is countless.
Intercom to come in fall
The installation of an intercom system, enabling direct communication from classrooms to the sheriff’s office, should be complete by the beginning of the Fall 2008 semester. Nextel has created a one-of-a-kind prototype call box that teachers and students alike can use to directly speak to the sheriff in the case of an emergency.
Super Tuesday, super sweet
People crowded around TV screens as record numbers of voters voiced their opinions. Results were slowly tallied and viewers were kept on edge. And it wasn’t even American Idol. Super Tuesday 2008 (Feb. 5) was the biggest day of voting in presidential primary history and the race on the Democratic side only got closer.
Department money on the chopping block
A further attempt to cut spending in community colleges has resulted in a district-wide push-back of department purchasing deadlines. A memo from the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) gave schools until Feb. 28 to make any last-minute department purchases for the 2007-08 fiscal year, which ends on June 30.
