Pierce basketball loses two conference openers

Both the men’s and women’s basketball teams both dropped their conference openers to Ventura College on Saturday.

Both games were played in front of a vocal crowd that was predominately Pirates fans.

The women’s team (14-6) fell behind early to the Pirates, who continued their run at an undefeated season, and improved their record to 21-0. The Brahmas managed to cut the Pirates’ lead to one by halftime, but would end up trailing by as many as 23 en route to a 98-82 loss.

Ventura guard Chanelle Brennan lead the scoring with 28 points. Pierce guard Monique Puentes lead the scoring for the Brahmas with 25 points.

The men’s team saw their overall record fall to 6-10 with their 85-75 loss to the Pirates (16-6). The Brahmas were once again unable to hold onto a lead late in the game. They lead 40-34 at halftime and by as much as nine in the second half before ultimately surrendering their lead with about 10 minutes left in the game.

Both the men’s and women’s teams next games are at Moorpark College on Wednesday. The men’s game begins at 5, and the women’s game begins at 7. The next home game for each team is on January 21.
