The decision regarding the possible cancellation of winter session has been delayed once more.
The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) Board of Trustees decided today to allow the nine colleges to individually decide whether they want to cancel or continue on with winter session.
It was brought up during the meeting that only five of the colleges are not in deficit, with Pierce College being one of two colleges within its budget.
“I don’t think we should be running winter sessions to put them further into deficit. It makes absolutely no sense to me,” Trustee Sylvia Scott-Hayes said.
“For the remaining five who are in the black, we should set parameters. The classes that are offered are transfer classes or career development. Ones that have high enrollment and are sure that those classes will fill. We won’t be able to meet all the students’ needs, but we’ll try to do the best we can.”
The budget for the nine community colleges called for a 4.39 percent reduction for each, leaving it up to each college on how they cut costs.
“They can cancel winter intersession or not. There is some leeway. It doesn’t have to be an across the board decision,” Acting Chancellor Adriana D. Barrera said.
She said any of the colleges can have winter session if they cut somewhere else.
The board postponed any decisions until their meeting on Aug. 19, allowing each college to make their own decision and report back.
“We need to wait until we have a better picture,” Trustee Miguel Santiago said.
