Trials continue in the death of a Pierce Student

The trial for the female suspect arrested in the May murder of 20-year-old Mateo Carranzaghezzi, a Pierce College student, is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. tomorrow at the North Valley Superior Court House in San Fernando.

Arrested in June, Mishelle G. Albanes was 17 at the time of the murder but is being tried as an adult.

Albanes and Brandon Schmidt, 17, are each being charged with four different counts. Both are being charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted, willful, and deliberate murder according Los Angeles Police Detective Jim Freund.

Schmidt appeared in court today for a status report. Schmidt’s former attorney had conflict and was unable to represent him. The continuation of his trial is scheduled between Nov. 12 and Dec. 11.

Carranzaghezzi enrolled at Pierce as Mateo Carranzag during the fall 2007 semester.

Police officers were called to Garrick Ave. and Dryer Street on May 22 in Sylmar Calif. to investigate reported gunshots in the area.

Police officers found the victim had suffered multiple gun shot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A dispute erupted between the suspects and the victim during a narcotics transaction according to Freund.

Both suspects have pleaded not guilty at their arraignments.
