People clapped and cheered today as the ribbons were cut at a dedication ceremony for the new students services building.
Interim President Joy Mccsalin was spoke at the ceremony. She thanked all the people who worked on the project and said without those people the building would have not been finished.
Mona Field, President of Board of Trustees, said that new buildings similar to the new building are being built for students across the district.
ASO President Shani Simms spoke at the ceremony with an injured finger. She said the building is going to be great for new students to find what they need and where to go.
After the speeches the ribbon was cut and everyone was allowed onto the first floor of the building. There were students and faculty in red Pierce College shirts at each corner and would explain different departments.
Marco De La Garza, Dean of Student Services, was in front standing behind the informations desk. He said the newest thing added will be a printer at the informations desk. Students can ask for any information and can get the printed out forms they need. He also said the clerks behind the desk will tell the student where to go.
The financial aid office, health center, counseling office, EOPS, admissions, special services, and assessment placing offices are all at the new building. Holli Fedenoco, Outreach and recruiment director, said there are 15 offices built in the counseling center, but there are only 12 councelors.
Heidi Arredondo, 26, said there will be computers for the students and free wifi. McCsalin said the building is green for the environment.
Stuart Silverstein, BuildLACCD director of public affairs, said this gives new students a new welcoming feeling by having everything pulled together instead of scattered around campus. He also said that all campuses are getting green buildings and installing solar programing.
