*EDITED* College Fair opinion

With the deadline for transfer applications approaching, Wednesday’s College Fair was helpful in supplying students with transfer information and options.

This College Fair was worth students’ time, unlike the previous event in September, which was geared more toward high school students and provided little information for transfer students.

“Last time, I just came and wasted my time because it was all for high school students,” said Henry Gonzalez, 21, neurology sciences major. He attended the September fair and left disappointed. This time he was able to talk to the University of California, San Diego representative to get information on what he needs to apply to the campus.

Most of the representatives answered questions and seemed honest and dedicated to helping interested students. Questions about the majors offered at the colleges were answered through handouts, each listing all the possible majors of that particular university. It was convenient for students who had to quickly grab some handouts before heading to their next classes.

The event was effective in offering students options.

Psychology major Simone Vasquez, 20, had not even considered U.C. Davis as one of her transfer schools. The college fair helped her explore and eliminate universities.

“I was strongly thinking about UCLA, but now I’m not so sure. I’m looking for smaller places,” Vasquez said.

There were representatives of some universities who did not interact with the students that approached their tables. Some were even texting away on their cell phones and offered no assistance as students looked through handouts.

Observing this was disappointing, but as I stood in front of a table looking over some handouts, the representative quickly offered his assistance. He gave me handouts I did not even ask for and even suggested other universities.

I walked out of the event motivated to continue working hard to transfer to a university of my choice. The fair made me consider universities I had not looked into and fueled my hopes of transferring.
