CSUN outreach counselor Cynthia Martinez conducted a CSU application workshop on Nov.19 in the transfer center in the new student services building.

Martinez stressed the need for students to get their applications in because CSUN alone has had three times more applicants than last year.

Martinez said this was the biggest crowd in the three years she has done this. “There is usually two or three,” Martinez said. “I was shocked and surprised when they told me I had a full room” Martinez said.

Martinez took the time to talk to students about the process of applying to a Cal-state. She used the site CSUmentor.edu. CSUmentor.edu requires you to work through the application in order of appearance.  So when students fill out their applications they are not able to jump around like most would like to.

Michael Masinter 23, thought it was a very useful workshop. Masinter a English major plans to apply to CSUN and other schools. “It clarified things and answered doubt,” said Masinter.

Martinez told students to send their transcripts at the end of the fall semester but to send the official transcripts at the end of the upcoming spring semester.

Joanna Zimring-Towne a counselor at Pierce said “I hope that students would get their answers filled at the workshop.”

Also talked about at the workshop was the Educational Opportunity Program system.  For a student to be eligible for EOP they need to be a first generation college student. Students families are also only allowed to be in the low to middle income. A student is considered independent in the EOP system at 24. EOP is designed to give students who have had a historically low-income and educationally disadvantaged, according to the EOP page on CSUmentor.edu.

Martinez also talked to students about the impact on CSU admissions. She said how schools that are a impact school due to cuts made by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Schools are firstly looking at local students in their immediate area then they look at the best applicants from other areas.

The transfer window for Fall 2010 ends on Nov.30. Martinez also said that the CSUmentor.edu site starts to slow during the thanksgiving week.
