Bill Plaschke, a sports columnist for the LA Times, was the latest speaker in the “Media Arts Speaker Series” in the Great Hall today.

Plaschke revealed his story on how he became a sports journalist to students and faculty members.

In his 23 years with the LA Times, Plaschke discussed his hardships in journalism and how his love for the profession helped him get a job.

“It doesn’t matter what race you are, what color you are,” said Plaschke. “If you love to write and if you want to work hard—you can do this.”

His first big internship was at the St. Petersburg Times in Fla., according to Plaschke.

The columnist said he wrote about things that set himself apart. He wrote about the stories no one else would cover.

“I write about things in the shadows,” said Plaschke, when talking about writing stories on people with disadvantages.

He said one of his favorite stories was about a Native American basketball team, whom had to play with a shoe. Plachke went on to win an award for the article.

“Covering sports is about people,” said Plaschke. “About covering the human condition. If you can tell stories, people will read them.”

Plaschke is also a contributor to “Around the Horn,” a daily sports show that features sports writers on ESPN. He is also the author of Plaschke: Good Sports, Foul Balls and Oddballs.

Chris Ledesma, the music editor of “The Simpsons,” will be featured next in the “Media Arts Speaker Series” on May 12, 2010 in the Great Hall at 6 p.m.
