Representatives of over 20 majors attended the Meet Your Major Fair where they spoke with students about different transfer majors offered at Pierce College, Wednesday in the Great Hall.

Psychology, Astronomy, Media Arts, and Criminal Justice were some of the many departments available. Counselors set up booths so students could meet with them to learn more about career opportunities and tips on how to be successful at their desired major.

Kim Rich, the administrator of the Justice department at Pierce came to the event to speak to students about criminal justice.

“This event is very helpful because students can learn the different types of jobs that go hand in hand with these majors,” said Rich. “It’s more than just a police officer job. There are other things people can do with their degrees.”

Rich’s main goal was to inform students and limit any preconceived limitations about finding careers after obtaining a degree.

“There are all kinds of jobs out there, including different civilian positions available,” she went on to say.

Cathryn Tortell, a representative of the Music Department wanted students to join music programs even if they weren’t planning on majoring in that field.

“I just want to get them (students) involved. They can come and participate in choir, orchestra and jazz bands that we have,” she said, while passing out information on symphonies and choir performances people could attend.

She spoke with enthusiasm to those who came to her booth and stressed the need for them to get involved.

“We’ve got the technology here and amazing faculty. There is no reason why anyone shouldn’t be involved,” Tortell said.

Candy was given to students who attended the 3-hour event. Counselors encouraged students to stay informed and visit other majors they haven’t looked into before.

“I encourage others to look beyond what they think they want,” said Dr. Angela Belden, a psychology professor at Pierce.

Although this is only her first semester here at Pierce, Belden was impressed with the school’s effort in promoting education.

Rauhman Lavergne, a student thought he knew what he wanted and did not feel the need to check into anything else, until he decided to go.

“I already knew that I w anted to major in history, but after coming here I realized that there are more jobs in this field then just teaching,” he said.

His advice to others is to get out of their comfort zone and explore other career opportunities.

“Too many people are so directed in their path that they don’t look at anything else. They are missing out,” Lavergne said
