Possible renaming of Swisher Park

Swisher Park might be changed to “Rocky Young Park” after former Pierce President Darroch “Rocky” Young, as suggested by Vice President of Student Services, Joy McCaslin during the Pierce Academic Senate meeting Monday, Oct. 25.

Young was president from 1999 through 2003 and is considered to be the originator of the college’s “master plan,” according to Public Relations Specialist, Doreen Clay.

“He had a vision for a successful Pierce College,” said Clay. ” I think [renaming Swisher Park] is a great idea.”

During his time at Pierce, Young was able to market the college in a new light and results quickly followed.

“Campus enrollment doubled and campus morale was high,” Clay stated.

Swisher Park, named after a former gardener who maintained the area, is not the official name for the park despite common usage.

McCaslin will speak with the Pierce College Council (PCC) on Thursday, Nov. 18 regarding the possibility of officially adapting the name change.

“Everybody loved him,” said Clay. “He united us.”

The interim vice president will be able to apply for the full-time position.

In the meantime the deans have been utilized as interims, according to McCaslin.
