Pierce French Club was awarded all the funds they requested to host their annual film festival Tuesday at the Associated Student Organization (ASO), meeting in the Great Hall.

The French Club kicked off its Tourne’es Festival this afternoon at 3 p.m. in the Great Hall after having to attend two ASO meetings to receive the funds necessary to move forward with the film festival.

Jonathan Facker, treasure of the French Club, addressed the ASO Senate on behalf of his club and made a final request of $1300.

“It is our goal and hope that this French Film Festival will promote appreciation for the diversity and cultural abundance on this campus,” said Facker.

“Furthermore, a French Film Festival on campus can be a great opportunity for cross-cultural examination, which can foster collaborations between many student clubs and academic disciplines.”

The ASO Senate voted unanimously in favor of allotting $1300 to the French Club for the film festival.

“We’ve been planning this festival since the beginning of the year but we did not have all the money to do it until now,” said Facker.  “We have raised more than $400 on our own by hosting a bake sale on campus, but we are asking ASO to assist us because it is so expensive to play the movies on campus.”

ASO Vice President Daniel Axelrod reminded the senators that it is the college’s policy that clubs and organizations must pay the licensing fee to show movies on campus if they are not associated with an academic course curriculum.

“The school can be fined by the production company that made the movie, so its better to be safe than sorry,” said Axelrod.

The French Club has partnered with FACE, the French, American, and Cultural Exchange, to help spread awareness on Pierce campus.

“FACE is an organization that works with college campuses to help bring awareness to new French films,” said Facker. “Pierce is the only community college within our district to be apart of this.  FACE has a total of  $200,000 to distribute to participating schools and since we are the only school [community college], whatever amount we receive will go to provide a scholarship to a Pierce student.”

The French Club has also partnered with the Cinema Club on campus.  Members of the Cinema Club will facilitate the discussion after each film throughout the festival.

“We have invited faculty from the english, history and psychology Departments to come and speak on the films from an academic point of view,” said Facker.

ASO President Nick Naczinski was pleased with the unanimous vote made by the senate.

“It’s our job to promote activities on campus and the French Club’s film festival will be beneficial for all students and faculty, plus they are giving back with a scholarship,” said Naczinski.
