Anna Davies, has been selected interim Vice President of Academic Affairs, a position that became vacant after Nabil Abu-Ghazaleh’s departure in September.

Abu-Ghazaleh served his last day at Pierce Sept. 30 before beginning his position with the Coast Community College District in the Costa Mesa area as Vice Chancellor of Educational Services and Technology.

Most recently Davies worked for Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria as Vice President of Academic Affairs. She is expected to serve as interim through June 30, 2011.

“Ms. Davies comes to us with wealth of experience in community colleges as an administrator, faculty member and a student,” said Pierce College President Kathleen Burke-Kelly in an e-mail sent to faculty yesterday.

In addition to having worked as VP of Academic Affairs, Davies worked as Dean of Student Learning at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo and was Dean of Instruction at Clover Park Technical College (CPTC) in Lakewood, Washington.

While at CPTC, Davies also served as Department Chairperson of the school’s Social Services program.

Davies is expected to begin her position as soon as the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) clears her paperwork.

Until Davies is officially on board, Dean of Academic Affairs Dr. Donna Mae Villanueva will serve as acting vice president.

According to the President’s Executive Assistant Cheryl Smith, Davies’ salary will not be available until she is cleared. The starting salary for a VP of Academic Affairs is $136,613.

Davies was granted permission to come on campus in an “unofficial capacity” to begin meeting members of the faculty until she is given her official start date.

Davies has a master’s in Education from City University of Seattle in Seattle, Washington and a bachelor’s in Social Work from Eastern Washington University in Cheney, Washington.

“We had an excellent pool of applicants for the position,” said Burke-Kelly in the e-mail.

Davies was unavailable for comment at the time of press.
