Brahmas taste victory in home opener

The Lady Brahma’s remember April 16, 2009 vividly– until Tuesday afternoon this date represented the last time the Pierce softball team left the field of play victorious.

That’s roughly 320 days without the simple and sometimes taken for granted satisfaction of earning a “W.”

Pierce defeated the Santa Monica College Corsairs at home 10-5, relying heavily on good pitching, solid defense, and an aggressive approach at the plate. Anytime those three happen to come together, the results will be in that team’s favor nine times out of 10.

“Our hitting and defense really came together today,” Brahmas assistant coach Danny Moore said following the game. “Still a work in progress, but I’m happy with the results today.”

In what was a very sloppily played game by the visiting Corsairs, the Brahmas had a few breaks go their way Tuesday. SMC committed five errors and misplayed countless others that won’t go down in the books, but nonetheless proved costly.

“We’re all one team,” Moore said. “This is something that we can build on…we need to get the girls out to tryout to make our team a little more competitive, it just takes time.”

Pierce would follow up the victory by defeating the Corsairs a second time on the back end of the double-header, 16-6. The team will look to continue with this momentum as they visit Mission College on Thursday at 1 p.m.
