Career Center hosts ‘Returning to School After 30’

Dana Blaine introduced the first ever “Returning to School after 30” workshop in the Pierce College Career Center yesterday, offering advice and tips to students who are attending school after the age of 30.

“It began with a suggestion,’ said Blaine, a career advisor. “We had so many students coming in with questions; I wanted to find a way to reach out.”

Blaine was able to relate to the students returning to school after the age of 30 because she had done the same at age 31.

She returned with her bachelor’s degree seeking to finish and get her master’s degree. She shared with the class that she was unable to cope with the stress she had from of all the homework and deadlines.

The workshop is intended to provide numerous suggestions on how to manage your time, stress, and anxiety after coming back to school.

Blaine also provided hand-outs for the class, which provided the students with the reliable support resources Pierce College is able to offer, such as the PACE program and the math and English Labs.

“I really thought the workshop was really helpful and would recommend it to students,” said Nusheen Karami, a 43-year-old student who returned to Pierce after only attending two classes several years ago.

Karami, who is an art major, left Pierce College to raise her children and has now returned to get a job as a pre-school teacher and eventually plans to continue with art.
