Students march against budget cuts while the universe opens for others on campus

From budget cut rallies to the galaxy accessible right on your campus things are happening at Pierce College.

The Budget cuts rally kicked off Monday morning with more than 300 students showing up for the cause.

The rally started in front of the Great Hall and marched out down Brahma Blvd. out to Winnetka to Victory Blvd. where the street was blocked off between Mason and Winnetka.

The truth of the matter is I obviously don’t want to pay more for classes. But the fact remains that California still has one of the cheapest community college systems in the country.

I of all people know how hard this fee increase is to swallow but I find it hard to agree with the level of outrage expressed by students on our campus.

The fact remains that California is struggling financially. Students are complaining that the cuts should come from elsewhere but they are.

Education is not the only thing being cut from. It only seems that way to students because that is what is effecting us most.

To be fair I do believe there are other places cuts could be made to lighten the blow to students. But I have friends in other states that are paying far more per unit for their education at a community college.

Pierce College is home to a brand new planetarium located at the new Center for the Sciences Building.

I find this to be extremely exciting new. I mean how amazing is it that astronomy students can study the stars any time day or night right here on campus.

The planetarium has theater style seats that face towards the ceiling. There are five projectors that digitally project the known galaxy to students on campus.

The only thing that would make this better to me would be if they aloud the occasional Laser light show. Something like the old Pink Floyd shows they used to do at the Griffith Park Observatory.

It could be a great way to gain revenue for the campus. Selling tickets for laser light shows to the community would bring in a large audience.
