Freshman midfielder Joandra Ramirez scored the only goal for Pierce in the Brahmas soccer home opener of the 2011 season.
The Pit and the hot weather set the stage where Pierce could just tie with a 1-1 score against a strong Cuyamarca Coyotes team who came in to send a message.
The game started with a Coyotes team hungry to score first, so they went into full attack mode during the first half.
Their efforts paid when at the 10th minute freshman forward Linda Ramirez scored after a great pass which left her alone against Pierce’s goalie.
“We did very well against a very good Pierce team. They’re very solid teams, with them we always get a good test,” said Cuyamarca’s head coach Daniel Codina. “Tying them says something about us that we’re doing things right, we hit the post quite a few times we could’ve got it in but it just didn’t fall.”
After the Coyotes scored, the Brahmas started to take more possession of the ball when midfielder Daisy Alvarenga started to get more touches on it, helping the Pierce team to get closer and closer to the opponent’s goal.
The prize came at the 30th minute when Pierce’s freshman midfielder Joandra Ramirez scored the tying game after a great team attacking display.
Although the Brahmas fought hard to get the winner in the second half almost not letting their opponents get to their goal, they missed a number of scoring opportunities.
“Honestly I expected more, we didn’t play like we practiced,” said Brahmas’ head coach Adolfo Perez after the game. ” We have to be smarter, we played a team that played big, that is physically stronger than us and we tried to put the ball in the air, you have to play to your strengths and i don’t think we did that.”
Despite the tie, the players know its just the first game and they have to rebound and get it back together for the next game.
“Overall we did good as a team, we worked together. We did the things better in the second half but we didn’t finish, we did everything we could but we just couldn’t finish.” said 2nd year defender Briana Chopin.
The next soccer match for the Brahmas will be an away game on September 2nd against Pasadena College @ 4pm.
