Brahmas’ quest for three-peat begins

The Pierce College Brahmas will begin their quest for a three-peat in the WSC Conference this Saturday when they travel to Bakersfield for their 2011 season opener.

Although there are a lot of new faces compared to last season, the coaching staff is excited and coincides that their defense will be the strongest part of the team this coming season.

“We have new guys in critical positions offensively,” said assistant coach Jason Sabolic. “Our defense might be the strongest defense we’ve ever had, we have so much talent, its just going to be a matter of them kind of picking it up and things of that nature.”

The Brahmas’ defense will be leaded by last season’s first team All-Conference selection Gerald Bowman who is the best defensive player of the country, according to head coach Efrain Martinez.

Bowman finished third on the team in tackles last season with 58.

One issue the coaching staff has to deal with during the first week of the season is the eligibility of the players, in which they always have a tough time getting every single guy eligible with paperwork, grades, and units according to assistant coach Sabolic.

“This week is hectic because of eligibility issues, things that we don’t have any control over, once it all gets cleared away i think we have a pretty good team, said head coach Martinez. “We’re excited, you never know, but we have the athletes to be excited about.”

The team reported no injuries going into their season opener this Saturday at 7 p.m. against the Renegades at Memorial Stadium in Bakersfield.
