Dream Act becomes law

The Dream Act, signed into law by Gov. Brown Oct. 8, allows undocumented immigrants access to financial aid while attending public universities, state and community colleges.

The Dream Act consists of two bills:  AB 130 which allowed undocumented students to obtain private financial aid and AB 131 which opened the door for public aid.

To qualify for financial aid students must have attended three years of school in California including at least one in high school.

The bill stipulates that undocumented students can only receive public aid after all other students have applied.

This will not go into effect until Jan. 2013.
