The sequined dresses, the clean cut suits, the circus freak garb and the amazing set lent to the feeling of an early 1930’s circus, the era of Vaudeville.
The musical “Sideshow” premiered to glowing reviews and a standing ovation tonight in the temporary Performing Arts Building. The actors and the scenes moved in a fluid fashion and the singing from the leads was amazing.
The highlights of the show were actresses Katy Harvey playing Violet Hilton and Miranda Chandler playing Daisy Hilton. Their voices filled the room with beautiful music and together their harmonies and acting worked, almost as if they really were siamese twins.
Harvey and Chandler play Siamese twin sisters who start off in a circus, the‘Sideshow”, as ‘freaks’ and end up on an adventure. An adventure that features freedom, love and fame in the Vaudeville circuit.
“Normally this would be done on a huge stage but it’s really come together given our limitations,” said Michael Sande Theatre Arts Manager.
With 22 actors in the production it is no small feat to have such a show, according to Sande there is a great cast and staff that work hard together.
Aram Nishanian and Jimmy Tran heard it was really good from their friends who are in the play.
“I’m not really a musical type of fan but I didn’t come expecting it would be this good. I actually want to see what happens next,” said Nishanian.
Tran enjoyed the play because of the excellent singers.
The leads were well chosen from the Pierce selection, their acting was superb and as Tran said, the singing was excellent. The ‘Fortune Teller’ Kathrina Aranas belted out a few tunes that awed the audience.
Yet it wasn’t just the leads that captured the crowd’s attention, the sets were amazing. The theatre had everything from a screen that lit up ‘The Sideshow’ exc., and a sparkling, floating white chair with wings.
An orchestra was accompanying the singers and even when the pianist missed a note or two the percussionist was on time.
This was the Theatre Department’s first performance that included more than eight people. To venture from eight performers to 22 in such a small space is amazing.
Ryan Thom plays about five different characters and this is his second musical at Pierce. “Tonight is going awesome, I got to sing a solo part and I’m just having great time; I definitely want to do another play here if I get the chance,” said Thom.
See the play. You will support Pierce and your girlfriend simultaneously. If all else fails see it because it will be, by Pierce’s standards, amazing. Some might be off because of nerves exc. but the leads, choreography, set, and costumes make it worth it.
It is almost as if the people that helped create it all at Pierce were Siamese twins themselves.
