Glendale College’s baseball team, last year’s Western State Conference champion, came back from a two run deficit to beat the Pierce College Brahmas in the ninth inning on Feb. 14.
The Brahmas on a three game winning streak saw it come to an end at home as the Vaqueros had runners on second and third with two outs when Pierce’s closer Pablo Gonzalez surrendered a two-run single to give Glendale a 7-6 victory.
“Gonzalez had them,” said Brahmas head coach John Bushart. “He had them right where we wanted him. An 0-2 but Gonzalez just missed his spot and Glendale scored on us.”
For Glendale (4-5), it was a big win for a team that has been struggling to find it’s rhythm offensively going into the game with a .235 batting average and having lost its previous two games.
“We’ve been struggling offensively and our batting hasn’t been great this season, but our guys stuck with it,” Vaqueros head coach Chris Cicuto said. “We started to execute and the bunts allowed us to generate offense. Once we started executing, the runs started to come.”
Despite the loss, the Brahmas offense continued to stay hot as the team had 13 hits and raised their overall batting average to .300.
Sophomore center fielder Dylan Tashjian had another solid hitting performance who went 3-5.
Tashjian believes the Brahmas still have some fine tuning if the team wants to be considered a serious threat.
“This loss just proves that we still need to improve on a lot of things,” Tashjian said. “We have to minimize our walks in terms of pitching, the infield still needs more work at fielding bunts. We have a lot more to prove and the good thing is, we know what we’re good at. We just need to work on the small things and not start overdoing it. We just need to play smart.”
Pierce’s next game will be at home when they play L.A. Mission College on Tuesday, Feb. 18th at 2 p.m.
