The Los Angeles Valley College women’s water polo team beat Pierce College for a 20-5 victory on Oct. 1, at the Los Angeles Valley College Aquatics Center.
Sarah Karp put it best when describing what the Brahmas (1-2 overall, 1-2 Western State Conference) were in for from the start of the game to the end.
“When they made the first goal in the first ten seconds, that worried me,” Karp said. “I knew that they would be pretty difficult.”
Monarch utility player Biyouregh Boghozian scored three goals in six Monarch possessions to give the team a 6-0 lead by the 4:06 mark of the first period.
Down 10-0, center Whitney Alderman had Pierce’s best chance to score when she shot the ball right into the top bar of the cage.
Sierra Marroquin launched the ball with her right hand into the goal near the tail end of the period to give Pierce its first goal.
Alderman scored the Brahmas second goal in a row to make the score 11-2.
“I think the best thing is to remember not to give up no matter what the deficit is,” Alderman said. “That’s what really matters. No matter what the score is just keep playing.”
Goalie Emily Gilbert who had a monster game in last week’s win versus Santa Monica had three saves by the 4:13 mark of the second period.
Coach Mariah Van Norman was upbeat about her team despite the 15-point loss.
“I think each quarter we got better,” Van Norman said. “Everytime we get to play we’re getting better and that’s all you can ask for as a coach.”
The Brahmas will be back home on Oct. 8 to play the Cuesta College Cougars.
