Students need more pathways to job security

Finally, you’re done. You have put in the work needed and accomplished the grades necessary to graduate.

Your future begins now, but where do you start?

How will you stick out among the others with possibly more experience than you? Pierce could offer an internship to a permanent employment program that leads to permanent employment.

As per campusexplorer.com, there are a few colleges with similar programs that have shown positive results. For instance, Penn State “offers students drop-in and individual counseling, career planning workshops and courses, career fairs, mock interviews, and resume and cover letter coaching. Its comprehensive website also includes a job postings network that allows students to seek out opportunities and employers, as well as a networking database that connects current students with alumni.”

At Florida State, there is a program that “focuses heavily on networking, resume and interview preparation, and personalized career planning. Their online interface allows students to research employers, sign up for workshops, apply for jobs, and network with potential employers, all of which help students gain an advantage in the job market.”

The program would consist of a three-step program that would take place over the span of three years.

Students would sign up in their first year and focus on resume building, interview preparation and finding companies of interest for internships.

The second year is when students would start their internships, which would last three-to-six months.

This would basically be a trial run for students to see if this company is a fit for the student and well as if the student is a match for the company.

It could be a paid internship by schools offering the same payment method and financial backing that the Federal Work-Study program allocates in a type of grant form.

Once a student has decided, they could then apply for a permanent job placement with chosen companies, and the companies would be able to select chosen students.

This type of program can create job security for graduates, while giving them a great starting path in their chosen career.

This would allow students to focus on school while embarking on their first steps to the career job.
