“Speed Racer” is an electrifying rendition of an old classic. Gentlemen, start your engines. The Mach 5 is back in action. “Speed Racer” was originally an anime series in Japan called “Mach GoGoGo” and gained popularity in America during the late 1960s. Baseball wrapup
A season of turnover, a season of pitfalls and of surges, and a season that came up just short has come to a close for the Brahmas. Pierce College finished the 2008 baseball season fourth in the Western State Conference with a conference record of 15-13 and an overall record of 24-20.
World hunger lacks nationwide priority
As I was loading my sixth box of Honey Bunches of Oats cereal onto the conveyor at Costco, I was perturbed to find a small scrap of paper taped to the register stating limits on the number of bags of rice we could buy: five bags per member. Sure, it’s not a huge deal; five bags of basmati go a long way in my house.
New bill fights for community college fairness
The funding provided to California Community Colleges has rarely been the amount promised, but Assembly Bill 2277, introduced by Assemblyman Mike Eng, hopes to lay the groundwork that will prevent future shortfalls. This bill has been put on the state’s “suspense file,” but will be reconsidered this month, according to the Community College League of California.
Diverse lineup exalted Coachella
If music pumps through your veins, sustaining you just as the oxygen in your blood does, you must have been at the recent Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The three-day event featured more than 130 bands on five stages. A one-day pass to the event was $90 and a three-day pass was about $270, but it was easy to get your money’s worth.
Webmail gives users a run for their info
Many Pierce College students make it a routine to run into the Freudian Sip, grab a snack and rush to a computer to check their latest e-mails from providers like Yahoo!, Gmail or Hotmail – unaware they might be preyed on by advertisers, spammers or even hackers.
Students treated unfairly have an option
“The teacher hates me.” “I didn’t know we were supposed to do that!” “This grading is so unfair.” Exclamations like these are heard in classrooms around the world, sometimes with sincere concern. Yet many students fail to take such complaints to a meaningful level.
Happy birthday, Israel
A siren sounds and the people of Israel stop what they’re doing, pull over their cars and stand in silence for an entire minute; it’s the day before Israel’s Independence Day. According to the Western calendar that is used in the U.S., May 14 marks the 60th anniversary of Israel, when celebrations take place throughout the beautiful state.
Impressive run
With their heads up and smiles on their faces, the softball team ended their season of ups and downs with something to be very proud of. Despite their many young players, girls dropping out and the team having only one pitcher, they managed to pull off almost triple the amount of last year’s wins, according to head coach Pat Grennan.
Comeback not enough to secure playoff glory
“This is a big game for us,” explained first baseman Eric Bloom during pre-game warm-ups. “If we win, we have a shot at the playoffs.” Winners of six consecutive games and 11 of 13 overall, the Brahmas propelled themselves into playoff contention with a blistering April.
