During the winter session at Pierce College, when the majority of students are away on break, most classrooms are dark and silent. But this winter, 30 classrooms in the English, science and math buildings will be filled with the sound of drills and the smell of paint as contractors perform the first interior face-lift in more than 40 years.

Gov. signs bill, equalizes funding students
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a new law Oct. 4 that will give more funding to community colleges and replace Proposition 13 which was passed in 1978. The measure says that community colleges receive their funding from the state, not local districts as before.
Mutt lovers walk for cause
New Leash on Life, a non-profit animal rescue organization, held its Nuts for Mutts 5K dog walk fundraiser at Shepard Stadium Sunday. Founded in 1997 by Bobby Dorafshar, the idea came while working as a volunteer for the City of Los Angeles Animal Services.
Weather station back in business
The storm raging around the Pierce College Weather Station for two weeks has finally passed. The weather station was unable to provide forecasts after a firewall intended to keep hackers off the school’s network unintentionally also blocked weather updates.

Starting this semester, the Associated Students Organization (ASO) will be re-establishing its judicial branch, the student court. The student court has not been in session for more than 4 years. “The court would be there to decide how to moderate student issues and grievances,” said ASO president Abraham White.

According to a CBS news report in January of 2003, American hospitals are in a serious crisis due to the severe and dangerous shortage of nurses, a shortage that can best be summed up by the fact that there are now over 120,000 open positions for registered nurses nationwide.

The best 7 years of my life.” To add insult to injury was the drawing of an overly gleeful middle-aged man accompanying the impertinent line.
