The immigration debate has traveled all across the United States. On Tuesday, October 9, it landed at Pierce College. Maria Elena Durazo, exectuive secretary-treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, spoke to students and faculty on the topic of immigration at the Campus center.
The rainy skies of the night before cleared as Pierce’s Shepard Stadium was transformed into a carnival-style playground, Sunday, for the foster children of Los Angeles. From Ferris wheels to food, everything was provided to the mentor and child free of charge.
Science will have a new home in The Center for the Sciences, a new building project currently being developed near the Mason Street entrance to Pierce College. The idea for the Center for the Sciences first came about in 2000 when Pierce College went through a master planning process, which included creating a central building for the science-related departments.

Mothering and mathematics By Ben Rizzo Sheri Lehavi is happy to spend her mornings teaching math at Pierce College. It is now 6:40 a.m. Outside, the grass is soaked with a cool morning dew, as the sun yawns and stretches its arms to the sky, still groggy from yet another good night’s sleep.
Like most volunteers who give a little to their community and the world, a non-profit organization is one step behind them, pushing them to make better use of their services. Newly organized Empower L.A. was present at the Day of the Child event, an event designed to give foster children a good time, in the Pierce College Shepard Stadium on Sunday and the event staff was in need of their services.
A vexing problem associated with text messaging on cell phones during class has become a full blown crisis without a curable solution on two fronts, according to Pierce College faculty. In each semester for the past three or four years, Ken Windrum, professor in cinema, says there are about one or two students in each of his class who need constant reminders not to check for messages or type on their cell phones during movie screenings.
The option is being given at Pierce College to earn college credit while giving back to the people that surround us every day. Students at Pierce are volunteering their time to help many different people in their community. Not only do students get to help others in need and gain experience in their field work of choice, they also earn one CSU transferable unit.
