Gathered under the stars the first Friday night of every month in the Campus Center a group of people sip coffee as they listen to lectures and discuss matters dealing with nature of the cosmos. The Pierce College Astronomy Society had its first meeting January 2005 and has been growing ever since.
Ronald D. Smetzer knows how glorious is it to be given a “Distinguished Engineering Educator Award” without having a doctorate degree. A professor of industrial technology and director of Cooperative Work Experience Education at Pierce College, Smetzer got the award last month from the San Fernando Valley Engineers’ Council.
In the Page One story on the Coretta Scott King vigil, the first name of Patricia Siever, professor of African-American history was misspelled, as was the name of Pierce student Abraham White in the accompanying photo caption.
The Pierce men’s volleyball team hosted a non-conference match Wednesday where they shut out Grossmont College 3-0. Striving to meet head coach Adam Black’s expectations, coming close enough still brought the team a win. Leading the team with 36 assists, freshman Kyle Luongo helped bring the first win 25-20 with a dramatic save off his foot.
The Pierce College baseball team soundly defeated Mission College 18-8 on a sunny afternoon home game on March 2, boasting three homeruns in an impressive day at bat. The first inning of play set the tone for the entire game. Mission allowed five errors, more than one of which were wild pitches, leading to men on third base stealing home (twice).
Looking out the window over the Arno River, I can make out the sights of the bustling Ponte Vecchio. While my friends and I practice our Italian, we discuss plans to go shopping, visit the Boboli Gardens and maybe take a weekend trip to Rome. By the sound of it, one may think I am on vacation, but I’m not.
It appears student workers at Pierce College who are getting paid through the Los Angeles Community College District are more likely to encounter a payroll related problem. “Last semester I wasn’t getting paid,” said Xavier, a student worker at the Freudian Sip who requested his last name not be used.
Other than being a shortcut from the Life Science Building to the Mathematics Building, the Botanical Garden on campus is a nice place to bask in the sun and broaden one’s knowledge of native plants. Phase One of the Botanical Garden opened in October 2003 and since December 2003, it has been a long wait for the Botanical Garden’s Phase Two.
An independently spirited woman and a graduate of the University of Tehran, Iran, Mitra Hoshiar believes that education is the best tool to bring about social and political change in her home country. She teaches at Pierce College, her class subjects’ range from American social problems to the sociology of aging to the study of society and personality.
