An informal memorial for Bert Sanchez will take place Monday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Building’s Mainstage. Sanchez, who taught at Pierce College for 11 years, died Friday, March 9 at Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center in Thousand Oaks.
Last year another U.K. Hip Hop artist by the name of M.I.A. was getting all the buzz in the magazines and on stations like MTV2 because of her innovative sound that combined multiple genres. This year’s newest U.K. import that people are already and are going to be talking about is Lady Sovereign.
Baha’i Faith Club, Christian Club and Helping Hands Club? What do the names mean to you? To me they mean places where one can go and share their thoughts and beliefs with others. Or a place where you can lend a helping hand to those in need. These are a few of the clubs on campus that many students may not be familiar with.
“James and the Giant Peach,” written by Roald Dahl, is the next big play directed by RosZa Horvath. The play is about James Trotter who once had a happy life, but that soon changed after his parents were killed by a rhinoceros. He was then sent to live with his two awful aunts in a house by an English seaside.
The Los Angeles Community College District board of trustees welcomed the activist group California Public Interest Research Group [CalPIRG] onto its campuses, to advocate voting in college youth. “We help students develop a voice on public issues,” said Ben Unger a CalPIRG representative at the board meeting Feb.
Some people are living, but they have been living dead. Some people have died, but they are still alive; they came, they lived, they fought and they changed the world. That’s what was conveyed to the public at the candlelight vigil for Rosa Parks and Coretta Scott King Thursday night at Pierce College.
The opening reception of the “Off-Planet” gallery exhibit would have made Martians homesick. Art and party refreshments turned into a cosmic tribute to outer space on Saturday with astro-photographs and a solar telescope complementing the works of the five artists.
Two swim records were broken and set Friday by the women’s swim team in the medley relay and backstroke. Jessica Chan, Christina Courtney, Paloma Slezak and Alexandra “Xan” Rodgers broke a more than 20-year-old record for the 200-yard Medley relay by almost a second.
The Pierce College men’s volleyball team won 15-13 in the fifth set of Friday night’s game against the Orange Coast College Pirates in the first home game of the season. The game was kept close by the Pirates who are traditionally good and “always have a lot of talent on their team,” according to Pierce’s head coach Adam Black.
Pierce College had one of the highest enrollment figures for Spring 2006 out of the nine Los Angeles Community College District campuses and has grown the most in enrollment compared to the previous spring. Classes opened Feb. 6 with 329 more students enrolled than in Spring 2005, making Pierce the only L.
