People crowded around TV screens. A record number of voters voiced their opinion. Results were slowly tallied and the viewers were kept on edge. And it wasn’t even American Idol. Super Tuesday 2008 was the biggest day of voting in presidential primary history and the race has only just begun on the Democratic side.

Pierce succeeds at accommodating, attracting growth
With a head count slightly more than 20,000 for the Spring 2008 semester, Pierce College has continued to expand and maintain a growing campus. Pierce enrollment has increased about 8.5 percent in enrollment compared to Spring 2007. In a few ways, Pierce has already begun to adjust to this growth by adding 250 new parking spaces, a new cafeteria and new ideas for the future.
Cafeteria name and food revamped
What was once called the Pierce College Cafeteria is now called the Pierce Country Café, with changes including a new head chef, Jose Cruz, former personal chef to hockey celebrity Wayne Gretzky. The name changed because, “we want a new face and want people to try us and try us again,” said Café Manager Linda Brown.
Primaries dominated by allegiance
Voting is traditionally supposed to be the vehicle for change. It seems like more than ever now is the time, as for the first time ever both a black candidate and a female candidate have a very good shot at becoming a “first” in terms of the presidency of the United States.
Total eclipse of the moon
After a rainy day at Pierce College, clouds seemed to part ways for students to enjoy the last lunar eclipse until 2010 tonight, just before night classes began. While teachers began preparing for the night’s lecture and students walked to class from crowded parking lots, everyone seemed to be looking up at the phenomenon.
Injured male escorted off campus to hospital
A male found lying on the ground near the North Gym and unable to get up was taken to West Hills Hospital by the Los Angeles Fire Department at around 12:45 p.m. today. The man slipped on a pothole and complained of ankle pain in both legs, according to Senior Lead Deputy Jeanine Swanson.
Intercom system on the way for campus safety
The installation of an intercom system, enabling direct communication from classrooms to the sheriff’s office, should be complete by the beginning of the Fall 2008 semester. Nextel has created a one-of-a-kind prototype call box that teachers and students alike can use to directly speak to the sheriff in the case of an emergency.
Academic Senate discusses budget cuts
The Pierce College Academic Senate met on Feb. 11 to address a lengthy agenda, primarily concerning the school’s budget. The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) supported Proposition 92, an initiative that stood to financially benefit all nine LACCD campuses.
Tax prep program back for all
The annual Voluntary Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) is back to offer free tax preparation to both students and non-students. Through the program, which is located in Room 3218 of the Business Education Building, Business 10 students offer free income tax preparation for anyone making less than $40,000 a year.
Textbooks inflate emotions on campus
Many Pierce College students rush to the campus bookstore to find used books for affordable prices, only to find that the books they are searching for are much more expensive than they may have anticipated. Despite grants and financial aid being available, some students do not have that luxury.
