The annual President’s Honors List Reception will take place Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in the Music Quad. Pierce President Robert Garber will be awarding student Trish Lougnane with the All-USA Academic Team award. The certificate is a collaboration of Phi Theta Kappa and USA Today.

Lecture about community college struggles
Rocky Young, legendary former president of Pierce College, and Carl Friedlander, president of the Los Angeles College Faculty Guild, explained how community colleges are struggling in terms of money in a lecture entitled “community colleges and the state of education” for encore students April 24.
Campus Wi-Fi in the works
Wireless Internet access is in the works for the Pierce College campus, but according to Information Technology Manager Mark Henderson, “we haven’t fleshed out all the particulars yet.” The hazy details include the cost of the project and the funding source, the timeframe in which it will be completed and the areas where Wi-Fi will be installed on campus.
Farmwalk
Pierce College went back to its agricultural roots, putting construction and expansion aside to celebrate the 16th annual Farmwalk on Sunday. Animals from the city joined the animals from the farm, along with some exotic animals from as far as South America, at this unique event where, for one day, Pierce opens up its farmland to the community to both entertain and educate children and adults.
Hands-free cell phone use while driving may be harmful
Speculation in the world of psychology suggests the law banning the use of hand-held cell phones while driving, which goes into effect July 1, may do more harm than good. The issue of “cognitive capture,” or the idea that conversations on cell phones are the cause of accidents and not the actual holding of them, was reported on by the Los Angeles Times March 25, A letter from Norman Mineta, former secretary of transportation, was run with the article in the online edition.

After a recent series of disappointing films, “Made of Honor” finally brought back the happy and feel-good film moviegoers have been longing for. Patrick Dempsey, star of ABC’s hit show “Grey’s Anatomy,” plays Tom, a bachelor and serial dater who has been best friends with Hannah since they met at a college party a decade earlier.
Dropping with a W
MAY 1, 2008- Friday is the last day for a student to drop semester-length classes in person and still receive a “W” on his/her transcript, Saturday is the last day to drop online or by phone. While students have until 3 p.m. Friday to drop at the Admissions and Records office, Sergio Naka, A&R assistant, suggest doing it tomorrow.
