Lets hear it 4 school spirit!
Pierce College students were enthusiastic about the cheerleading tryouts this year as nearly 20 spirited dancers showed off their moves. The co-ed cheerleading and dance tryouts were held three days in a row at the North Gym. “Clinics,” were held for two days and consisted of teaching offense, defense and general cheers, which the participants had to memorize for the actual tryouts held on the third day.
Flushing a fortune
$4.3 million. That’s a lot of money to flush away. Our education system is forever in need of improvement and $4.3 million could pave the road to a better education for community college students at the nine L.A. Community College District campuses. Instead, this money is being spent on a runoff election between the top two vote-getters for Seat Five on the LACCD board of trustees: current board president Georgia Mercer, and her opponent from the reform group, “Alliance for Education,” Roy Burns.
Inform, then contain
Last week, when the demolition work began on the bungalows, few at Pierce seemed to bat an eye. But, the front page photo that this newspaper ran showing asbestos warning signs and quoting a crew supervisor as saying that the asbestos was going to the dump, reportedly caused an uproar among College officials.
Rejection never felt so good
I got rejected from the University of California, Los Angeles…again. The first time I applied was as a senior in high school. I didn’t have the best grades or the highest SAT scores, but I had the tenacity and the drive that made me believe I could make it at a big university.

Can you smell that? It’s the scent of accomplishment. Springtime is almost over and once again we see the graduates being honored for their efforts and released from the stressful life of a student. For people in their twenties, life seems to be one endless chain of events, each leading to the next, that are supposed to be gratifying in some way.
Former Pierce President Marie Martin dies at age 96
The first female president at Pierce, Marie Young Martin, died in West Hills of natural causes Oct. 3. She was 96. Martin led Pierce from 1966 to 1970, through times of war, civil unrest and dissent, through bra burnings and the breakthrough of human rights.

Students who show up to school a week from Friday may find it an eerie experience. Closed gates, empty parking lots, papers blowing across a silent mall, no sound but the chirping of birds in the trees. No, it’s not a scene from a horror movie.
Baseball reigns as league champs
A combination of solid defense, steady hitting and a great pitching performance earned the Brahmas the top spot as Western State Conference South baseball champions Thursday at Pierce College. Tall right-hander Dan Berlind threw a complete game, striking out 12 and issuing no walks to lead the Brahmas to a 12-3 victory over College of the Canyons.
