Engineering award a 1st for community college
Ronald D. Smetzer knows how glorious is it to be given a “Distinguished Engineering Educator Award” without having a doctorate degree. A professor of industrial technology and director of Cooperative Work Experience Education at Pierce College, Smetzer got the award last month from the San Fernando Valley Engineers’ Council.
Friendship Force storms campus
The Friendship Force of Los Angeles found a home for its World Friendship Day celebration at Pierce College on March 1, while thousands of others celebrated in their own countries around the world. In an effort to promote world friendship, peace and understanding between cultures, the Friendship Force revamped the Campus Center to create a mecca of cultural food, music and international people for the community to meet and enjoy.
Astronomy club looks for the dark side of the moon
Gathered under the stars the first Friday night of every month in the Campus Center a group of people sip coffee as they listen to lectures and discuss matters dealing with nature of the cosmos. The Pierce College Astronomy Society had its first meeting January 2005 and has been growing ever since.
New coach tackles old record
Pierce College, an institution not known for its prowess on the football field, announced the hiring Kevin Moore as head coach in a news conference Friday afternoon. Accumulating only six wins in the past three seasons and with the resignation of head coach David Banuelos, the football program was in dire need of rejuvenation.

‘Vacancy’s’ thrills don’t check out
Roadside motels are given a whole new meaning as “Vacancy” checks in with bone-rattling horrific thrills in a nice, 85-minute package with enough blood and language to fill an R-rating. But does the time and rating give the film an extra punch or is it just limping behind its other scary brethren? This small tale chronicles the journey of David and Amy Fox (Luke Wilson and Kate Beckinsale), a disgruntled couple who can’t seem to get through a conversation without trying to scratch each other’s eyes out.

Listening to the falsetto tones and wide range of Robin Thicke’s voice is the sweetest ear candy. The sultry R&B sounds carry a neo-soul flavor and are reminiscent of the late Marvin Gaye and Brian McKnight. If Thicke’s last name sounds familiar that’s because father Alan Thicke played Jason Seaver on the mid-80s hit television series “Growing Pains” and also sang the theme song to the show.
